Catherine the Great was crushing the fashion game in 1700s Russia, and The Great star Elle Fanning has successfully channeled that same 18th-century fashion sense in all of her most memorable red carpet looks. Elle, who stunned at the Golden Globes in a Tiffany-blue Gucci gown, has had a passion for vintage style since she was a child. "My mom would let me wear whatever I wanted. I went to a lot of thrift stores and would mix [different pieces] together," the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil star said during a January 2020 interview with Marie Claire.
At events like the Cannes Film Festival and the Met Gala, Elle stands out in fairy-tale Reem Acra gowns, luxurious flowing Gucci capes, and floral designs fit for a queen. When she's not walking the red carpet, Elle loves to thrift and shop secondhand clothes that have a retro twist to them. "Some people are repulsed by that smell of vintage clothes, but I love it. I think it's because I'm a very nostalgic person and I daydream a lot. I feel I was possibly born in the wrong era - those old movies, Grace Kelly, so gorgeous, you know." While we patiently wait for Elle to release a video about her top tips for thrifting, check out some of her best vintage-inspired red carpet looks here.
